Reducing food waste in fresh produce - Sirane can help

REDUCING food waste is set to become a major topic of 2015 – the UK alone throws £19bn away every year – and Sirane is once again aiming to be at the forefront of innovation.

Industry body WRAP is working on an industry-wide agreement to tackle the food waste problem, which is being dubbed Courtauld 2025 as it will supersede Courtauld 3.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “As companies start to look for solutions to the food waste problem, the message from Sirane is that packaging can make a big difference – and we’re here to help. We’re a problem-solving company, so give us the problems.”

WRAP has held talks with leading supermarkets and retailers, following a damning report by the House of Lords which revealed the UK is responsible for one fifth of the EU’s food waste.

Courtauld 2025, which WRAP has proposed to start early 2016, will be a 10-year framework aimed at developing a new farm-to-fork commitment to tackle inefficiencies.

Courtauld 2025 will help consumers to avoid food waste, but crucially will target businesses in the supply chain and work with them to become more efficient and cut waste. The Courtauld 3 agreement targets individual stages of the food cycle – household waste, supply chain waste and packaging waste – whereas Courtauld 2025 will look at the whole cycle.

Jeremy Haydn-Davies, Sirane sales director, said: “Innovative packaging can work throughout the supply chain, and can significantly cut wastage. Many of our products have been developed with exactly this goal in mind, as it’s an area we have expertise in.

“In the fresh produce sector we’ve developed a range of solutions that help cut wastage, and we’d love to hear from companies who are interested in further development work in order to tackle industry problems.

“We work with producers, packers and retailers, so we are able to assist throughout the supply chain and offer solutions that can impact positively on wastage – Sirane is well-positioned to have just as positive an impact on the objectives of Courtauld 2025.

“Sirane developments from recent years include a lot of work on shelf-life for fruit and vegetables, with new products including a breathable film offering significant shelf-life extension and an absorbent cushioned protection pad for soft-fruit which significantly reduces the amount of damaged and unsellable fruit.”

Supermarkets and food retailers came under fire from Westminster in April after a report published by the House of Lords EU Committee claimed British retailers are merely shifting the food waste blame on to customers with ‘Buy One Get One Free’ offers.

According to the committee, retailers are failing to take full responsibility for the amount of waste they contribute to the 222 million tonnes of food that gets wasted every year.
Described by the Lords’ report as “morally repugnant”, Britain’s inability to tackle the food waste problem is said to be costing the economy at least £5 billion a year.

The report said supermarkets had a much bigger part to play in reducing waste, and that Britain’s retailers have the power to “influence the behaviour of producers, manufacturers and consumers but ”have failed to take their responsibilities sufficiently seriously”.

Evidence used by the committee demonstrated how retailers use deals like Buy One Get One Free offers to encourage consumers to buy in larger volumes so retailers can move stock they may have over-ordered on. Retailers only directly account for around 5 per cent of food waste - with consumers causing 42 per cent and producers 39 per cent - but the report argued closer analysis shows retailers have developed ways to make other parts of the supply chain take on the waste they have caused, by cancelled orders, over-ordering or insisting on standards that a significant proportion of a farmer’s crop cannot reach.

WRAP will announce a formal proposition for Courtauld 2025 next year.

Sirane attending Fresh Summit in Anaheim next week

PMA’S Fresh Summit is the biggest fresh produce show on the American continent – and Sirane will be paying a visit to the show in California next week.

Fresh Summit – organised by the US Produce Marketing Association - is in Anaheim from October 17th-19th.  It will be attended by Adam Green, president of Sirane North America.

He said: “Fresh Summit will be attended by representatives of some of the biggest fresh produce companies in the world, as well as many of the smaller companies who are also looking for packaging solutions and ways in which to maximise profits.

“It represents a great opportunity for people to meet with Sirane and see for themselves the products that Sirane makes and the difference they can make in the market.

“I have a number of meetings already arranged, but would welcome the chance to meet up with any other companies looking to change the way they package produce.”

One of the products already gaining a foothold in the US is our revolutionary absorbent cushioned pad for soft fruit – Dri-Fresh Soft-Hold – launched earlier this year.

Adam said: “We believe Dri-Fresh Soft-Hold pads offer soft fruit the ultimate protection.

“Dri-fresh Soft-Hold fruit cushioning pads are ‘absorbent bubble pads’ – perfect for packaging berries of all types - combining the cushioning and protective properties of bubble films with effective absorbency, high permeability and excellent presentation. “

Dri-Fresh Soft-Hold has been developed in partnership with some of the key industry players. Together with the industry, Sirane has been working to understand the parameters which affect the shelf-life and quality of soft fruit and to develop products to optimise shelf-life and quality as well as reduce transit damage, increase value and improve presentation.

It is a breakthrough product which will transform the industry - adding value to all areas of the soft-fruit growing, distribution and retail chain. It will reduce wastage, reduce transit costs, open new export markets and encourage sales growth for all types of soft fruit.

“This is the perfect product for soft fruit protection,” said Adam. “Soft-Hold is also available with integrated anti-fungal properties for extending shelf-life in all applications.

“Soft-Hold has been developed with distributors and retailers in mind, with an eye on the needs of the companies involved. Our customers have been telling us they want pads that offer more protection for the fruit, which extend shelf-life, and are affordable.

“Soft-Hold ticks all the boxes, and the feedback so far has been incredibly positive. It combines everything into one great product, with the cushioned layer offering that final level of protection that no other product on the market has managed.”

Dri-Fresh Soft-Hold is available as loose pads of any size as well as reels for automatic packaging operations. Standard colours are red and black and other colours are available on request. The products are available for all global markets and applications.

Dri-fresh Soft-Hold is the result of several years of dedicated research and development in Sirane’s Development Centre and extensive trials in the global soft-fruit market. The Dri-fresh Soft-Hold core is a gently-yielding cushioning material which provides the softest support for each berry – giving it the best possible chance of staying in perfect condition.

Anti-fungal options are also available - anti-fungal treatment been shown to extend the shelf life of soft fruit beyond that available with current technologies. Integration of pad and anti-fungal treatment can significantly reduce packaging costs for growers and distributors.

The product complement an already impressive list of products perfect for transporting or selling fresh produce, including Dri-Fresh Resolve and, Dri-Fresh Fresh-Hold pads and our incredible shelf-life extending film and bags, Sira-Flex Resolve – all of which Adam would be available to discuss with any interested companies while at Fresh Summit.

“The concept of our fresh produce range is simple,” added Adam, “We want customer’s fruit or vegetables to arrive with them in the best possible condition. For this they need the ultimate protection – and our range of packaging solutions offers that.”

Adam’s visit to Fresh Summit will be followed by a visit to Santiago, Chile, where he will be attending PMA’s Fruittrade Latin America Show from November 12th-13th.

Food technologist joins development team at Sirane

A FOOD technologist has joined the research and development team at Sirane.

Camille Lefaux studied at the IUT Nancy Brabois, France, before completing her masters degree in food and biological science at the Ecole Supérieure d’Ingénieurs en Agroalimentaire de Bretagne Atlantique (ESIAB), from where she graduated last year.

As part of her studies, Camille completed a three-year part-time apprenticeship at seafood company Capitaine Cook, as well as placements at Grands Moulins de Paris and Sirane.

“I was in an internship here two years ago and I enjoyed my time here, working in a fast changing and dynamic environment where we adapt our products to meet the customer needs,” said Camille. “I had the opportunity to test the Sira-Flex Resolve film, and the results were very stimulating: improving shelf-life by up to one week for some fruits! Two years ago, I particularly appreciated the pleasant ambiance in the company … which is still the case.”

Camille will work on a range of different projects, such as measuring performance and effectiveness of different new products developed by Sirane, particularly shelf-life - providing data to Sirane’s sales team, but also - and more importantly - to our customers.

She added: “I will also be working on various development projects in order to answer the needs of our customers. Finally, I will do some application development: Sirane has a lot of new products where I will work with customers to help them to use them effectively.”

Shelf-life extension of fresh produce and meat/poultry will be the focus of some of Camille’s first projects, with a view to getting trial data relating to Sira-Flex Resolve, our shelf-life extending bags and films for fruit and vegetable, data on our ethylene absorbing and odour absorbing products, and data on potential anti-fungal treatments.

Camille will also work on further developing our range of susceptor-based packaging for crisping food in the microwave, and on expanding our waxed boneguard range.

Bob Whitwood, Sirane technical manager, said: “Camille will also be working with customers on product design to enable them to get the perfect solution, and also on cooking trials with new and existing products to allow us to offer advice on the best cooking techniques.”

Sirane is an innovative packaging design, development, manufacture and solutions company which specialises in areas including absorbency and ovenable/microwaveable products, compostable packaging, films, boards, absorbent pads, and much more.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “Camille is a very welcome addition to the Sirane team. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge which Sirane can put to good use, and from which we and our customers across the world can quickly begin to benefit.”

Sirane – which is based in Telford, Shropshire in the UK - has four divisions: food packaging; medical and healthcare; horticultural and industrial. Early in 2014 the company began to expand into North America, with manufacturing expected to begin in the United States before the end of the year. Offices were also recently opened in Singapore.

It has an additional manufacturing facility in Antalya, Turkey, as well as offices and warehousing in Cape Town, South Africa, and offices in Dubai. In addition, the company is well supported by a global network of agents and distributors.

New packaging solutions at Fresh Produce India

FRESH Produce India – the country’s largest fresh fruit and vegetable expo – will see Sirane’s agents introducing some major new packaging innovations to the fast-growing market.

The three-day conference, expo and networking event looks at the renewed impetus for Indian exports, as well as the rising consumer demand on the Indian sub-continent.

Sirane will be supporting AVI Global Plast, agents for Sirane who distribute into the fresh produce sector and will be taking a number of our products to market there – including our new absorbent cushioning pads for soft-fruit, and our shelf-life bags and films.

Simon Balderson, Sirane MD, said: “India is a very interesting market for us. Not only does the country export a huge amount of fresh produce, but imports are also increasing rapidly.

“Sirane’s packaging solutions for fruit and vegetables offer growers and distributors, as well as importers, the means to get their products to where they need to be in superb condition. We can help with presentation, increase shelf-life, reduce wastage – and increase profits.

“AVI Global Plast are in a strong position to take these innovations into the Indian market.”

Fresh Produce India is held in Pune, the cultural capital of Maharashtra and a key hub in India’s major export growing region for table grapes and a range of other fruit and vegetables such as bananas, pomegranates, mangoes and exotic vegetables.

Topics set for discussion include: Keeping Growth on Course; New Market Opportunities; Facing Up To The Challenge of Sustainability; What Does Peru Have to Offer India?; New Packaging Solutions, and Emerging Products and Sources for Indian Importers.

Sirane’s most recent packaging development for soft-fruit is our absorbent cushioned pad.

Dri-fresh Soft-hold fruit cushioning pads are ‘absorbent bubble pads’ – perfect for berries of all types as well as pomegranate seeds - combining the cushioning and protective properties of bubble films with effective absorbency, high permeability and excellent presentation.

It is a breakthrough product which will transform the industry - adding value to all areas of the soft-fruit growing, distribution and retail chain. It will reduce wastage, reduce transit costs, open new export markets and encourage sales growth for all types of soft fruit.

“Soft-hold has been developed with distributors and retailers in mind, with an eye on the needs of the companies involved, “said Mr Balderson, “Our customers have been telling us they want affordable pads that offer more protection for the fruit and extend shelf-life.

Also on show at Fresh Produce India will be Sira-Flex Resolve, our shelf-life extending bags and films which have returned some remarkable shelf-life extension results from trials.

Sirane’s Sira-FlexResolve is a unique film which has been developed to have the optimum balance between humidity control and O2 and CO2 permeability.

The permeability is temperature dependant so that the perfect atmosphere is maintained inside the pack even if the storage temperature is variable.

Mr Balderson said: “The results from some of our trials across the world are remarkable. There is no condensation on the inside of the film and the product does not dry out.

“The package atmosphere is maintained with the optimum balance of atmospheric gases to prevent degradation. In simple terms, the food lasts longer.

“Shelf life extension of several days and more is achieved for many products. The film is suitable for all types of vegetables including salads as well as many types of fresh fruit.”

The film is a natural bio-polymer made from plants. It is sustainable and fully compostable. The permeability is controlled by the property of the film itself.

Due to the unique structure of the film material, the permeability to humidity, O2 and CO2 is different in each case. This has allowed Sirane’s team of scientists to balance the permeability of each component to achieve the optimum result.

Trials have shown very positive results with many types of fresh produce, particularly tomatoes, mushrooms, salads, green beans, strawberries, bananas and brassicas.
